The book "Parallel Journeys" is trying to tell the story of young people in WWII. Its main message is to not seek revenge and try and understand each other. It's trying to show us how another holocaust could happen again and what allowed it to happen in Germany. This book is still valuable today because the message is still the same, to understand each other and don't seek revenge. It is also really relevant because another Nazi Germany could happen again somewhere else in the world. The book ends by talking about Helen Waterford's and Alfon's Heck experiences after the war and how they felt about it. Alfon talks about how he thought more than the holocaust the misuse of people's loyalty toward him was evil. "The gross misuse of our loyalty to our country and love for our Führer is, to me, just as much a criminal act as the murder of six million Jews" (Ayer 224)

My book “Parallel Journey” is about a boy in the German Youth and a Jewish girl. The girl is a Jew running from Nazi regime, hiding in Amsterdam. The boy Alfons Heck was a firm believer in Germans master race. He was a high rank in Hitler's Youth. These events relate to our current events today because in World War 2 there were people who had to leave their countries in the book the Jews had to leave Germany to flee Nazi rule. Today, people from Syria and other middle-eastern countries are fleeing their homes to leave dictators. The book and current events have direct connections with each other. Also in the middle-east boys are being brainwashed to join terrorist groups like ISIS just like the German boys were in Nazi Germany.
The events in the book “Parallel Journey” is about a boy serving in the German Youth who talks about what it was like to be in the German army. The other is a jew girl who goes into hiding from the Nazis. "It was a picture of power to the German Youth". This connects to World War Two because it is two biographies about people's experiences during this time. The Boy who was part of the German Military shows why and how followed Hitler and what it was like to be “Aryan” in Nazi Germany. The girl shows the oppression that Gypsies, people with disabilities, and Jews faced during the war. These show what life was like in Nazi Germany and how it shaped the future of the world. Coal Ash from Duke Energy had leaks from their coal power plant. These were a violation of pollution laws. These leaks caused neighbors of the power plant to have relied on bottled water for over 1,000 days in fear of getting sick from the pollution. We should all care for these sorts of issues because if these things keep on happening it could effect you next so we must stop pollution before it gets uncontrollable. To solve this problem we should have the power plants inspected every month and power plants that continuously break laws be terminated. I am interested in this issue because I care about this planet and the people living on it. Everyone else should care about it if they care about themselves or anything else.
I believe in competitions people should not be given medals for participation. This is because losing and not getting a medal can be a motivator for people to do better. Getting a medal for losing may also make people believe that you will get rewarded even if you do not do well. Therefore they may not put in the effort to do as well just because they know they will get rewarded anyways. When I was eight years old my soccer team every four months participated in a soccer tournament with other people in our league. During the second last tournament I had with the team we did really poorly the entire tournament. Seeing the other people getting medals motivated me to practice more. After the tournament I practiced almost everyday for hours trying to improve my soccer skills. When it came time for the tournament I felt that I was prepared and I had improved a lot from the prior tournament. During the entire tournament we had been doing good the, and we only had two games left. The two games that were left were against the two hardest teams in the bracket and these were the games that would decide who would win the entire tournament. The next team we were playing was the team that we lost to in the last tournament eight to zero. The game started out slow and took along time for anything exciting to happen which was a goal from them. Within the first half they had scored three goals and we had not accomplished anything. Going into the second half we were not motivated and had little hope. However, some of the team still had hope. The other teammates and I tried to motivate the rest of the team. Through determination, we finally found an opening in their defense ten minutes into the half. I had ran through the opening and someone given me a ball, I took a huge touch and I chased after it and when I did I shot and scored. The other team started giving up and that motivated us even more and we kept on pressuring, allowing us to score another four goals winning us the game. Yet, we still had the hardest game left against the top team in the division. Directly off of kick off the team chased every single ball and we were playing at their pace. They were better than us technically and could easily get through many of our players. It was five minutes into the game and they were already winning, they had already had a goal. We still tried our hardest and it payed off when we got a goal. Although we got lucky and they should’ve been winning it gave us all hope. We tried our hardest but eventually the other team started picking up pace and scoring. It was four to one and there was only twenty minutes left. After five minutes we had gotten a break away and I scored another goal. The game finally ended and we had put up a good fight but lost. I was proud of myself because my hard work had payed off and we had come in second. This taught me that sometimes losing and not getting anything can be a motivator to do better. This is why I think people should not be given medals even if they lose. |
